Your booster pump is running. So why is your water pressure getting worse?
Did your shower once have great pressure, but now it barely delivers? If your booster pump still works yet the water pressure has gradually deteriorated, we’ll investigate the cause before recommending a repair or replacement.

A problem we can investigate
Your water pressure used to be better. What changed?
When a booster pump was first installed, the shower may have been powerful and several taps may have worked comfortably together. Over time, that performance can decline — even while the pump continues to start, run and sound normal. The answer isn’t always a bigger or newer pump.
Pressure has gradually weakened
The shower or taps are noticeably less powerful than they used to be, with no obvious total pump failure.
Multiple outlets struggle
Running a second shower or tap causes a much bigger drop in flow than it once did.
You’re unsure where the fault lies
The pump seems to operate, but the problem could be in the pump, controls, water supply or connected pipework.
Common warning signs
Does any of this sound familiar?
These symptoms can indicate a performance problem with an existing water boosting system.
- The shower pressure isn’t what it used to be.
- Water flow drops when another tap is opened.
- The booster pump runs but delivers disappointing pressure.
- Pressure varies or takes longer to recover.
- The pump cycles more often or runs for longer.
- You’ve been advised to replace the pump without a clear explanation of the problem.
Finding the real cause
A working pump doesn’t always mean a well-performing system
Water pressure and water flow are related, but they’re not the same thing. A pressure reading at the pump may appear acceptable while the water delivered to a shower or tap is restricted.
Possible causes of declining performance include:
- Worn or damaged pump components reducing performance
- Partially blocked strainers, filters or pipework
- Faulty pressure sensors, switches or electronic controls
- Restricted supply from a water storage tank
- Faulty non-return valves or pressure vessels, where fitted
- Restrictions in shower valves, taps or individual outlets
- Leaks, pressure loss or changes in household water demand
These are possibilities, not a diagnosis. Testing is needed to identify what’s actually causing the problem.
Don’t replace a pump until you know why performance has dropped.
A new pump won’t necessarily cure a blocked line, an insufficient water supply or a restriction elsewhere in the system.
Our goal: identify the cause and recommend the most sensible way to restore your system’s performance.
Where a repair or adjustment is appropriate, we’ll explain that option. If replacement is genuinely needed, we’ll explain why.
Our proposed assessment process
What happens during a water pressure assessment?
Rather than guessing from the sound of the motor or changing parts at random, we investigate how the system behaves in actual use.
Tell us what’s changed
We’ll ask when the pressure began to deteriorate, which outlets are affected and whether the problem is constant or intermittent. Photos of the pump and controller help us prepare.
Investigate the system
As appropriate and accessible, we check pump operation, pressure under demand, flow at relevant outlets, controls, valves and the storage-tank supply to help locate restrictions or faults.
Understand the options
We explain our findings and the practical next steps, which may involve an adjustment, servicing, a targeted repair, further investigation or replacement if needed.
Assessment charges: We’ll confirm the call-out or assessment fee and the agreed scope before booking. Any additional repair or replacement work is quoted separately.

Your questions answered
Frequently asked questions
Why is my water pressure low when my booster pump is still running?
A pump can run while delivering less flow or pressure than the system needs. Wear, restrictions, supply issues or control faults can all contribute. The most useful first step is to establish whether the problem affects the whole house or only particular outlets.
Does deteriorating water pressure mean I need a new pump?
Not necessarily. Some faults can be resolved through servicing, adjustment or replacement of a specific component. A proper assessment helps distinguish a pump fault from a problem elsewhere in the plumbing.
What if the pressure is poor in just one shower?
That may point towards a local restriction, shower valve or outlet issue rather than the whole-house pump. Tell us which fixtures are affected when you make an enquiry.
Can a pump show good pressure but give poor flow?
Yes. A static pressure reading alone does not describe the volume of water reaching a fixture when it’s in use. Measuring performance under actual demand helps identify flow restrictions.
How much does a pressure assessment cost?
The price depends on the property, system and access required. Contact us with a description of the problem and we’ll confirm the assessment fee and scope before you book. Any subsequent repairs are agreed separately.
